Naseem Hamed’s on-off clash with Michael Brodie could now be set to go ahead at the MEN Arena in Manchester this summer.

Hamed has fought just once since suffering his first defeat as a professional against superb Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera in April 2001.
The 28-year-old returned to winning ways with a points victory over Spain’s Manuel Calvo at the Docklands Arena in May last year. However, his performance that night was mediocre to say the least and the former IBF, WBC and WBO featherweight champion has been out of action ever since.

A clash with former British, Commonwealth and European super-bantamweight title holder Brodie was first muted last autumn, but now the signs are Hamed is ready to resurrect his career once more.

Brodie’s manager Jack Trickett told Sky Sports: “There is a provisional date - June 7 is what we’ve been told.”I’m assured that (US cable network) HBO have accepted the fight, they’ve booked the arena and now it’s just up to Naz.”

Barry Hearn is in Vegas at the moment and is supposed to be coming back with the contract - if it gets signed, it’s on.”Really, where else can Naz go. It will sell the MEN Arena out, no problem, and it will be a good fight for him.”As far as I know, and I’ve spoken to Naz myself, Naz said he will definitely fight Michael Brodie. He didn’t name the date but he did say it will be this year.”

Brodie, also 28, has won 34 of his 35 bouts, the only defeat coming via a highly-contentious points decision against American Willie Jorrin when fighting for the vacant WBC super-bantamweight title in September 2000.
